Replaced after 1 year of use
Pretty sure the XJ-3800 has a 1 year opperating timer on it for the filter replacement light (i didn't keep track of the day i started using but it was definitely within a couple weeks). I let it go a couple months after that since I usualy wiped both sides of the HEPA/carbon filter off when I cleaned the rest regularly and figured the timer wasn't accurate. I was quite surprised when I actually replaced the filter - the difference the new one makes! Immediately I noticed a "fresher" smell coming out of the air purifier, and within a day of use I could smell the difference in my basement (about 1k sqft). So I would have to say the 1year change interval is probably accurate, and this filter works extremely well to keep the smells down.
It does have the built in carbon filter on one side, and the HEPA on the other. For a HEPA filter it's actually fairly cheap - most other hepa units have much more expensive replaceable filters. If you sign up for the subscribe and save you'll...
Also Fits The Advanced Pureair 9000
I have an Advanced Pureair 9000 and its hard to find the filters and parts. After doing some research I found out that the same team designed the XJ-3800. The look very similar and the only difference I've seen is the 9000 has a little more advanced controls. So it took a chance and order this filter. It fits even better than the factory replacements. The filter looks exactly the same but has a better gasket around the edges and provides a sightly snugger fit. Im hoping this makes it even more airtight.
So if you have the Pureair 9000 you have found a place to get your filters at a discount and with Amazon service.

I LOVE my Surround Air but with a huge hairy dog and living in a rural area, the purifier gets a real workout. The purifier tells you when the filter needs to be changed when a light comes on in the front. I was a bit concerned when I ordered the filter because one reviewer said it didn't fit property. Thankfully that was not my experience. The filter was a perfect fit and a GREAT deal. I'm going to keep a spare at all times! Oh - don't forget to reset the filter on the air purifier!!
